22 – Emmas Rituale / Emma's rituals

22 – Emmas Rituale

22 – Emma's rituals

Rituals are habits which we adopt or introduce into our daily lives. So for example we have developed from our need to eat, which is clearly necessary in order to live at all, different rituals each depending on its symbolism (feast, common daily meals, diets etc.). Other rituals, such as social customs and religious ceremonials, may not be as essential to live, but promote group cohesion in social life and thus provide security and sense. Some of those rituals disappear with time, either because they were eliminated (for example, through the Crusades and colonization other rituals were forcibly imposed to natives) or they become less significant (because time changes and we, for example, find it is no longer important to pray before having a meal or to trust so-called authorities blindly).

Well, I have to eat in order to be able live at all and recognize a purpose in life in order to live at all, like all other living beings... If I just trustfully imitate, I don’t challenge anything but accept blindly. In the past, we only had few comparative examples (insights in other cultures) and often also too little courage to eye something critically, because mostly we were taught to adapt ourselves... But only if I take my ideas seriously, compare them critically with what there is and how it usually is handled, I learn to think out of the box... If I take myself seriously, I will also take responsibility for myself and my actions... and consequently I certainly will look upon my life as more worth living as if I couldn’t decide about it myself... I am my own product in the nature of my body, my mind and my soul, because I am the result of the requirements of life and how I am dealing with them - it is and will always be my own choice (and no decision is a choice too)!

My life is worth living if I enjoy my actions. And if my outputs cause positive inputs, I feel approved! :) Anyway, I guess we will never reach our ultimate goal because we do not even know which our ultimate goal is... That means for me: As long as I feel approved I'm on the right track, if not I need to change something! So I started already in early years to integrate eventually and consciously my insights into my rituals and strengthened myself with them, because it's like driving a car: The more often we do something the more natural and automated it becomes! But even those automatisms are full of pitfalls and we turn faster into a robot than we expect! Therefore, I tried to visualize awareness about life and what I actually intended also with rituals... and I started to learn how to observe and be...
I personally consider it as very important to consciously plan how I spend my time, because that is ho I take matters into my hands! I am free and independent and (almost) all doors are open to me, I only have to take the first step... I trust because I trust myself! Anything can happen - always! And as long as I see a meaning in my actions, I will have the motivation to continue what I am doing - wherever it will lead me to... If I feel good about it, I will continue to follow the direction!

I think I was lucky enough to grow up with parents from different cultures, because it made me identify different points (of view) from the beginning. In addition, my mother was a very brave person who had learned and dared to be critical! So for me it was not too far-fetched, to like her, be also being questioning rather than submissive...

21 – Emma nutzt die Zeit / Emma takes advantage of the time

21 – Emma takes advantage of the time

Waiting... waiting, but what for? The time I am waiting I could use to do something else... and do good things rather than nothing! I start with what is there and make the best of it... Like this I take advantage of the time, as: There is no good, unless you do it!

In order to set the world on fire we need to begin and operate on a small scale... simply start and observe what happens - we always have to look closely to detect problems, as it is the only way we learn to deal with them! If we look at everything as if it was new, we see countless facets and become more courageous to explore possibilities outside of accepted norms!

Of course I have to start with myself! Everything that is important and correct to me, I imitate and take over as a ritual (for example: regular tooth brushing). With different inputs from my external world I optimize my dental care by taking over and adapting certain sequences in my daily schedule (for example: I brush through each tooth face at least 2 times, 2 times a day before I go to bed I use dental floss - and once a week I use a tooth whitener and a fluoride).

Because I like to be nice and well organized, I arrange my life nicely and practically... How do I want to be? What is there around me? What can I use? How can I improve it? - I orient myself outward (I imitate) but at the same time I perceive my needs and thus optimize imposed inputs and adapt them... or I design something that is completely new to me, even if it already exists but is unknown to me (constructivism)...

In addition I had committed to a very large undertaking: The education of my daughter Lena... Back then I didn’t know a lot about education but I wanted Lena to grow into an independent individual with who I would share all my knowledge and from whom I wanted to learn a lot... I think we can learn something from everybody, for only by comparing with others we get to know ourselves! And most of all we learn from children, because they are still so honest and unbiased - but unfortunately also easily manipulated and conditioned! I could write a whole book on this subject... and I even will if I get to it! ; ) In any case, I think it's an extremely important issue which can guarantee the survival of our species...

Suddenly, I found myself in middle of life and had saddled myself with more than I would have liked... and moreover the fact was that I wanted to do everything thoroughly and accurately! I set myself high standards: I was conscientious enough not to let an opportunity slip in order to keep a promise. I had a huge commitment to perfection to make the best of what there is in all respects. And yet I was always considered of others and careful not to hurt them with my thoughts and views! I learned to accept those idiosyncrasies as a part of me and make me who I am. I am me ... neither more nor less valuable than all the other individuals, but certainly as much - just different, as all are different!

Why should I need just get something done rather than do it as good as possible? - So that is it done? If I put heart and soul in something, then maybe I can see things I could do to make it better? Only, this is very time consuming and retards progress, because we won’t proceed until it is perfect - and it will never be perfect!

That was also one of the reasons why this story was for too long just a plan in handwritten manuscripts ... for a long time I found it very difficult to covert my many years of written thoughts into a book, simply because it was never perfect - because I never stopped to make experiences and learn from them, that’s why perfect was inaccessible! But now I know perfect is just a snapshot and I'm perfect because I know that I’m not! ; )

Basically, my attitude to work was just a compensation for the lack of recognition and attention that I expected from Gian... now I wanted to get it right or wouldn’t start it in order to receive this recognition - wherever I got it from!

Soon I began to discover orders and systems everywhere. I had to learn to prioritize, because I was aware that I could never handle it all... because time has always been my worst enemy! I created my own systems in order to maintain order and overview and made my life as convenient (practically as well as esthetically) as possible for myself and for the time being in order to find my way...

20 – Emmas Erwartungen / Emma's expectations

20 – Emmas Erwartungen

Wer bestimmt überhaupt, was wir erwarten dürfen?

20 - Emma’s expectations

Actually I always put high demands on myself, on life in general and on others... for me this was completely normal, because at the time being I didn’t know differently. Only with time when I learned to know more and more people and their characteristics and compared them with mine I realized that my expectations were rather higher than normal...

So for me it was always natural to question critically and to understand first before I accepted anything. It was only when I met people who believed and took over in its entirety everything that others say or is disseminated by the media that I realized, that there were horses with other colours... and that their reasoning represented their standard! Therefore all of us are limited by the capacity of our own mind and we draw conclusions from our experiences… until we expand it.

In order to broaden my view I depend on clarifying and constructive discussion... so I expected to have an honest conversation with others and was stunned whenever someone lied into my face without the bat of an eyelid! Why oh why do some people just do everything to cover up the truth and hence take others for a fool? This never will work out, eventually the truth comes to light and establishes clarity by putting things back to where they belong... It's like a snakes and ladder board game: In a misstep there is too much time is wasted before getting back on the right track!

For me personally it's always a big disappointment when I catch a respected person in a lie... I just don’t want to believe it... Maybe because I do not want to change my impression of this person? I look for excuses and try to understand what causes a person to distort the truth by intentionally including only certain points and deliberately omitting others...

I never expect more from others than I am prepared to give myself or at least I am willing to try to achieve... I want to be an honest person and actually thought others had the same intention... but it soon became evident that views of ‘honest’ drastically differed! Were my ambitions too high or even absurd? Had I drawn the wrong conclusions and thus was on the wrong track? Or is it in the end the interpreted values of good and bad, which causes people to be guided by such standards and let them forget that 'bad' may end in 'good' if we are ready to tackle a problem?

Thus I was ready for unconditional love and faith but expected the same in return from others... I believed in the mutual enrichment of energy and power as well as in honest feedback, I could rely on! Only after many bitter disappointments I started to think my expectations over... Why do others not have similar high standards? Where do expectations come from? Are they an inner urge that wants to cover our (basic) needs? Or are they values of our society and educators, that have evolved and which are burned in by conditioning from generation to generation? Anyways, who determines what can be expected?

For example, the saying ‘In for a penny, in for a pound' requires an adherence to old - a promise forever - and consequently doesn’t allow any evolution! Even criticism is often declared as a blame and thus indisputable? And yet, what is said and done, is said and done - for whatever reason! And everything we do will be noticed - not only for us by itself! Even though no one responded! And everything we do is noticed, at least by ourselves - but what do we make of it? Do we conceal it, because we realize that it isn’t as great in the eyes of others or do deal with it with the intention to learn from it? And anyway, why do we do things for which we are ashamed (later)??? - Maybe society suppresses us with too rigorous standards and common sense will be wiped out by conditioning?

If we can forgive (ourselves), then at least the stamp 'bad' does not stick on us - and if such a misstep occurs only once, we will have forgotten about it soon... I am able to forget if the wound has healed: But a wound cannot heal, if it is poached in the same place again and again, like this it remains open, heals very slowly (if at all) and its scar will remembered of it forever... However, it is easy for me to forgive, because I learned that forgiveness is necessary if I am to free myself and allow myself to develop only what we let go is able develop!

In my relationship with Gian the lack of communication was always a severe handicap... Gian wasn’t able or didn’t want to express his wishes and expectations towards me and therefore locked me out. He seemed to ignore me, but gave attention to others, and this hurt terribly! Although he didn’t say anything, he seemed to listen to me and also understand what I was saying... this I noticed especially in his reactions! I often wonder what would have become of Gian without me?

As Gian and I didn’t have common plans, I started to forge my own, simply because I did not want to wait and watch my life passing by... I didn’t want to waste my time passively with expectations, which usually end in disappointment anyhow, but use it actively and take up further studies in many different areas. And there was something else I became aware of and which later proved to be very essential: I started to surprise my counterparts with understanding and love!

19 - Beziehungen / Relations

19 - Beziehungen

19 - Relations

The first relationship we are exposed to is the one with our mother; it will shape us as well as our faith in life! - Are we welcome? Do we receive enough food and affection in order to thrive and grow into a healthy individual? Are we brought up to think for ourselves or conditioned in such way as to seek lifelong dependency? - As an infant and toddler we are dependent on others and unable to take charge of our own live... consequently we are totally dependent on the goodwill of our educators and those who provide for us…

Nowadays, children are often brought up by only one parent and therefore are at the mercy of the influence of one single person... Isn’t that fatal?! In this situation, a child does not have the opportunity to compare different opinions, since there is only one choice! Before it gets the chance to know other ways, it will find itself already on a highway that leads clearly from A to B without taking into consideration the many side streets! Previously in extended families a child could (and still can in some southern countries) compare from, early on, a wide variety of personalities and opinions and consequently draw its own conclusions... Extended families not only have its economic and practical advantages: Instead of sending old people to expensive nursing homes without duties and contact of young life, in extended families they are a part of life and play a role!

Where do we come from? Where do we ground? I wonder if we can control where and when we are born as a human being? Will we be able to reconcile our visions with the existing system or will we have forgotten them even before we have found our way? Thus, some of us will be constantly torn between desire and need, and the ambivalence of our expansive and depressive ideas will eventually settle into schizophrenia... Others will focus on themselves, suppress any compassion in order to remain themselves in a well-adjusted world and become so-called autistic persons. But mainstream will usually exert the strongest influence, because it is easiest not to swim against the current, their creative abilities will be stunted although they will secretly break out from time to time...

As a child we soon learn to know our own power and that of others... We adopt behavior patterns, in order to achieve what we want, and apply them until others won’t play along anymore! - I can be anything, but the environment and people around me are co-responsible if and how I unfold my capacity... Without the help and goodwill of others it takes enormous courage and strength to grow to an autonomous individual and not simply adapt to the standards of society.

If we have not learned differently, we will be running on 'safe' tracks before we realize what life means! We will have adapted to the system, in which we live, and stemmed or even forgotten about our individual visions and talents... Solely a free spirit of another can revive our abandoned impulses, but most often passively and observing in place of actively discovering life!

In different relationships with other people we learn to know ourselves as well as others. We often enter established standards, accept hierarchies and join in the game without thinking... The suggestive power of our superiors and society keeps us under its spell and we follow blindly! Depending on the opponent and what we want to accomplish, we will respond in a different way... We learn the game of manipulation faster than we realize it! And thus will remain dependent on others forever...

In business relations we learned to define rights and responsibilities precisely. But in private relationships it often seems that power play prevails... Why are the different skills of women and men not consciously used symbiotically? Lastly we do agree to a conquest or even initiate it ourselves... and mostly we choose someone we can look up to? But how can we appreciate someone, if we have never learned to but instead take everything for granted? Or do women still submit naturally? - Sometimes I wonder what criteria make for example the elephants choose their partners?

Well, are relationships a question of power? Is the point to take and demonstrate a certain position of might? - Personally, I believe that we cannot achieve anything with force, on the contrary: People who think they are mighty and omniscient put themselves already on the highest level and therefore are not able to continue to evolve! Moreover, how the hell does anybody come to the conclusion that he is better than others??? This alone testifies his limited awareness and megalomania! A real authority never feels like pressing its standards and will on anyone... he opens up options and lets others choose because he won’t consider other as stupid!

If we approach new things openly and without preconceptions, we are capable of learning something from everyone and everything! We will learn to observe rather than to judge and interpret! We will have the courage to meet authorities, who abuse their power, with criticism and give real feedback, namely to whom it concerns - regardless of the consequences! Because if we act in the truth we won’t have to be afraid of consequences...

The mystery of development in any relationship consequently consists of the way in which we approach each other... If we want to impose ourselves, there is only our own opinion which counts – whereas if we are open, we can draw on unlimited sources! To give real feedback means to be a true friend and shows authenticity: If we are not used to it, it is more difficult to tell the truth than to flatter!

Communication is essential to give our opinion, share opinions and understand each other. It creates transparency and avoids short-sighted interpretation. Conflicts show our current position, open insights and let us grow spiritually and progress to further levels of consciousness. But only if we are able to admit errors, we will accept and improve them deliberately... People who think they are already perfect won’t grow!
