33 - Dependency

Whether we like it or not, all living beings are dependent on food and attention, because without these two basic needs life is impossible (as has been proven by controversial experiments)! As food maintains and builds our body, so too does mental and spiritual food maintain our mind and soul. - What is the point in getting up in the morning and accomplishing something? - If I find myself in an environment where I am loved and accepted, everything makes sense, I even can flourish! But if my ideas are not shared and I am not understood as a person, then I get no attention, I as well as my ideas cannot grow and I have neither motivation nor will...

In an environment without love, there are in fact only two ways to survive: We adapt to follow the others or we call attention to ourselves and push others aside... Already as a new born, we learn strategies to win through (in some way) in order to get what we need - because we want to live! Consequently, we are dependent on our environment, on the goodwill and intelligence of our educators and also on the society we are born in... Are we conditioned to depend on others or are we encouraged to embrace autonomy and responsibility?

As much as I wanted to be converted by my free spirit, I still was depending... on Gian... I adapted myself to him and his life, did everything in my power to live at least a kind of common and family life and to get his attention... In addition, I was financially dependent on him because I had opted for the education of our daughter, therefore stayed at home and was not able to have a paid job.

To what extent would I adjust myself? When would I start to question the rules of society and not just blindly follow the crowd and the dictatorship of the media? Would my discontent manifest itself in destruction? Or would I be able to keep my own opinions and attitudes? Towards what will I orientate myself and who will be my guides? Why? Would I be able and willing to survive in a society where people are hungry for power, control and are controlled? Would my free spirit be able to maintain the struggle for self-sufficiency or fall a victim to convenience?

I can control dependency if I am aware of it... and if changing something makes sense, I even do it! Only like this I am in charge of my life and won’t find myself suddenly on the playing field of another or the wider society, which I actually deny... Too much consideration implies also a standstill of our own energies and the risk of losing ourselves! It is impossible to please everybody... and only our fear of consequences (which we imagine in our mind) makes us dependent on the current situation, because a certain confidence in our ability to control the well-known lulls us into a sense of security...

Food and attention - we will get both. In our part of the world food is less of a problem and fortunately I myself had it under control quickly, because I learned to cook - and how! ; ) Besides, I improved myself with my interest in deepening and expanding my knowledge. On my travels I have noticed that the ability to love is bigger where there are problem of food... In the ‘civilized’ world people are too concerned with themselves and their goods - caring is often neglected. Whether this has anything to do with our old rooted mindset? Our society is based on monotheism and therefore dictates monogamy... Who says that it is correct to love only one person? And who is so powerful and all-knowing that (all) others accord him unconditional credibility (= dependence)? - Incredible, but it happens again and again! Should I take over these guidelines, I inevitably feel guilty if I do not get my attention necessarily in the 'provided or accepted' way of society... But who or what is society? - A grey mass that follows any standards without even reflecting on them, because all the others do so!? Would it not be intelligent first to become aware of and deal with our own individual needs before they are dictated onto others?

My motivation to live my life as a human being was always to achieve as much wisdom as possible and to make the best out of a situation. But the more I know, the more I strive to be autonomous, in a certain way even autarkic... to find my place here on earth, to contribute my share (in microcosm), to accept the challenge of the constant change and find out to what extent I can give directions myself? - I am not obligated to do anything at all! Just to be myself and go my way... Only if I am on my way, I will realize how it is and I certainly will get my basic needs – how exactly, life will show me on every occasion...

32 - Emma is off the wall

Suddenly I began to get angry with myself. How could I be so naive, stupid and dumb?! I was tired of always being sidelined and watching others being served first. But what annoyed me most was that Gian knew how to show interest! Why not just with me? Was I not interesting enough or did he use his interest toward others intentionally to achieve what he wanted? - In any case, I could not take it any longer getting no respect and attention and leaving me on the substitute’s bench... and I asked myself more and more how I could tolerate that at all!? Why oh why did I put all my eggs in one basket, when there were others to place them???

Gian did not want to share his life with me that was for sure. I could not change a thing about it. He did not communicate, so did not let me participate in his life. If he said something, it was done reluctantly as if he expected and feared criticism!? Or did he fear even envy and therefore told so little of his fortune? – And yet it is such an inspiring feeling to see others happy and becoming a part of it! As I mentioned: Sharing...

Since Gian had started his business, he invested all his attention and energy therefore and worked 7 days a week. When he came home in the evenings, he was so exhausted that he retired tiredly... Of course, I could understand that he had to be tired! I just never understood how anything could be so important that he did have no time for Lena and me at the end? When I asked him about it, he didn’t waste neither a thought nor a word on it.

It became really bad when Gian started to lie more often in order to manipulate facts. The first few times I was hoodwinked by my naivety. I did not want to believe the truth and it made me almost incapable of taking the required action: I just could not believe that he dared to flat-out lie into my face! What kind of man was he? Why did he do something that he later negated and denied? - It is so unfair because this abuse of authority and power deprived me of the truth... But with time I saw through him, I always let him know that I did and so my respect and admiration for him dwindled day by day... The lustre faded...

What I had to learn now was to call a spade a spade and to see things as they were, not the way I would have liked them to be! I actually tried to do so as long as I can remember, that’s why I started to question those things that I could not understand... but I didn’t get a reply, at least not from Gian. He rarely cared about an answer and often simply walked away... Then I really wondered how he would deal with conflict in business!? My next step was even more uncomfortable for me and those involved... Because it was not only embarrassing for me to reveal my wounds to others, but also to feel the often affected or ignorant reactions. Most friends regarded me as brave when I uttered taboo topics, but in the end they were so adjusted that they tried to dissuade me from my thoughts. This made me realize that everything is just an illusion... we only see and believe what we want to understand!

It became clear to me that it could not be a constant battle - a good relationship cannot be forced, but simply is and must be maintained! I was not able to do it alone as it robbed far too much energy, the way that I faced a next depression over and over again... Should I drop Gian like a poisonous snake (in the apt words of Jiddu Krishnamurti)? Why hadn’t I done so already a long time ago? Was I really afraid of the consequences and had become too comfortable?

No longer would I ignore and suppress my emotions and feelings but rather learn to deal with them! I didn’t want to accept powerlessness over predicament, but wanted to understand and solve problems. And that’s what I did with Lena... so I focused on her education. I loved watching her grew up and becoming independent and I did everything not to tie her down to me - she had to be able to make her own experiences!

More and more I managed to live in the now and here, to forget the past and focus on me and Lena. Many rituals I had adopted were nothing but seeking for stability and occupational therapy, of which I am aware today. I earned some money with modelling and even more recognition. I went out of the house and met people, that’s how I became independent of Gian and his whims. Soon I had made many new friends and lots of confidence in life and the future... Now I realized that I received everything I needed... not necessarily the way I imagined it, but certainly what I needed to adopt my balance! - How could I ever have forgotten about it and built on such a fixed idea? My will and imagination had set high goals and expectations that were too fixed...
